Stone Town
The Heart of Zanzibar
Stone Town is the heart and historical city center of Zanzibar. Nestled against the water, you'll find beautiful views of the Zanzibar Channel. Dotted with a few islands, the channel separates Zanzibar from the Tanganyika mainland. As you approach the harbor, the water is covered with small boats used to fish or take guests on a local tour. In Stone Town, you can find a variety of cafés, shops, and historical sites hidden amongst the narrow, winding streets. If you take a visit, be sure to wander up and down the passageways, exploring each unique nook and cranny. The architecture is a result of various building styles coming together. One of the clearer examples of this are the traditional Omani doors that you can find all over stone town. They are characterized by large wooden double doors with intricate artisanal designs carved into the doors themselves and the surrounding frame. The doors are beautiful, each their own unique design. A popular tourist spot is the Old Fort. The fort was originally built by the Portuguese in the 17th century. It would later be rebuilt and primarily used by the Omanis during their rule of the Island. It is now used for various cultural events and is even the home to an amphitheater. During our visit, we stopped by Stone Town Café, a small restaurant and Bed and Breakfast. Here we had a quick coffee break from exploring. Though we did not stay the night, it looked like a quiet retreat for those looking for a relaxing stay on the island. Stone Town and the whole of Zanzibar are full of history worth exploring. We'll take a look a closer look in a future blog post, but in the meantime, I hope you can enjoy a few photos from our time on the island!
