The history of Christianity in Georgia goes back to the first century AD. Orthodox tradition attributes Simon and Andrew for first bringing Christianity to the Georgian people. Ever since, there has been a strong presence of Christians in the country, with the vast majority of the population being members of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The initial motivation to build the Cathedral was to celebrate 2,000 years since the birth of Jesus and 1,500 years since the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Autocephaly, or self-headship, came from the church in Antioch around the 5th century. Construction began in 1995, and the Cathedral would be consecrated on St. George's Day in 2004. The Cathedral is huge, reaching heights of 280 feet and covering approximately 32,000 square feet. Built in a traditional Georgian style, it is in the shape of a crucifix, centered with a large dome. Housing nine chapels, some were placed underground for more useable space. The interior is grand, featuring icons painted around the walls and arches. Beautiful mosaics are featured in various places of the cathedral. Around the complex is a free standing bell tower, seminary, monastery, and housing for the Patriarch. While being new, the complex echoes back to ancient architecture and does not feel like it was completed just over 20 years ago. If you make your way to Georgia, the Holy Trinity Cathedral is worth a visit. Its size and beauty are like none other in the area!
