Kyrgyzstan is full of things to do during the winter season! Central to the city of Bishkek is Ala Too Square. Home to a Christmas market and ice skating rink, there is plenty of fun for everyone. Many of the booths sell food and drinks, but we recommend finding and trying the hot chocolate with marshmallows as you walk around the Christmas market. The square is covered with string lights, giving a warm feel despite the cold temperatures. This square is also home to the city's New Year's celebration. Just opposite of the Christmas markets is a huge stage for celebrations. Though you won't find a ball to drop, there is plenty of singing and lights for the festivities. Leading up to the new year, multiple artists performed for the audience, getting everyone excited for the new year. Just as the clock counts down, the president welcomes the new year. All throughout the festivities, illegal fireworks randomly pop off in the background. Once the new year is over, there is still plenty of fun to be had around the city. Just outside of Bishkek are about five ski resorts you can visit in an hour's drive. We visited the Chunkurchak Ski resort and had an amazing time! This was the first time skiing for both of us, and we spent a good amount of time on the slopes learning to stay upright. The Chunkurchak Ski resort has a nice beginner slope to learn on, but not much for the professionals out there. The lodge has a nice array of Central Asian food to keep you going all day long. All of these Ski resorts are on the Tian Shan mountain range, stretching all the way from China. Also meaning Celestial Mountains, they live up to their name! For anyone interested, we would highly recommend taking a trip up to the mountains to ski! The country of Kyrgyzstan is a beautiful place with warm and welcoming people. It is a must stop for anyone looking to visit Central Asia!
