Saffron by the Sea

Finding a hidden gem in the heart of Salalah

On the southern coast of Oman sits Salalah, a tropical paradise in the midst of the brutal deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. Here you'll find lush greenery and rain that brings to life local waterfalls and streams! The city surges with visitors from all over during Khareef, also known as monsoon season. On the beach, you can find cafés and a pleasant walk to enjoy the views. The Dhofar mountains run parallel to the coast, offering views no matter where you look. Whether you’re looking for a hike or a lazy beachside experience, Salalah is the place to be. While the beaches and waterfalls are worth a visit, we stumbled upon a hidden gem in Tempo Café and Restaurant. Here we were hosted by some of the kindest and friendliest staff we have met in all of our travels. At their recommendation, we were served a feast of traditional Iranian food. Our platter consisted of saffron and dill rice, Bakhtiari Kebab, and Soltani Kebab. Each and every part of the dish was spiced to perfection! Before our food even hit the table, we were served with homemade lemonade with a hint of mint. Afterwards, we had a traditional saffron pudding with a unique and delicious flavor. Our meal was topped off with some high-altitude Iranian tea, a must get for anyone stopping by. After our meal, we got to speak with the chef and restaurant manager, who told us all about the food and Persian culture. We had a great experience and would highly recommend anyone visiting Salalah to stop by and enjoy a meal!
