Putting the "Grand" in "Grand Mosque"

From the massive marble columns supporting a ceiling covered in intricate patterns to the expansive courtyard with its similarly designed floral patterns, the Grand Mosque was built with great care as a grand spectacle. The spectacle, however, is not merely the point. The main prayer hall can accommodate 7,000 people, while the courtyard accommodates 13,000. Even though the mosque is situated near a bustling highway, the space is largely peaceful, and the sound of the city's business is muted to a dull hum in the background. This is the jewel of Abu Dhabi; the combination of beautiful edifice and intentional international conglomeration manifests the fundamental desire of the United Arab Emirates.

Putting the "Grand" in "Grand Mosque"
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

The shining white domes of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque leave a distinct silhouette in the Abu Dhabi skyline. Amid the steady stream of cars shuttling through the metropolitan area stands a monument to the religion and ideals of the founder of the United Arab Emirates. 82 domes stand in harmony in 550,000 square meters of polished stones and elaborate designs that contrast with the steel and glass of the modern city. Materials from all over the world are united in this space. This unification reflects the Emirate leaders' desire to bring the world together in this city.
